How it all started

From a single idea to a global adventure

Math Masters circle

Sometimes ideas aren’t born at a desk, but in the silence of the morning.

I was inspired to create Math Masters on an ordinary summer day in August 2024. The sun was shining through the curtains, birds were whistling their song… and suddenly the idea was there!

A board game where children and adults can enjoy mental arithmetic. Where not only the right answer counts, but also courage, speed and a bit of magic.

Knowing that only 30% of Dutch school children are reaching their target in math, I imagined a world where children don’t sigh and struggle when they have to do math, but beg for another game! A game where grandma joins in too, and your mind grows sharp from playing.

From that moment on, it was no longer a question of whether Math Masters would be made, but how!

How teachers and professionals react on Math Masters

The response to Math Masters in Dutch classrooms was overwhelmingly positive during our many rounds of testing. Teachers saw their students not only enjoy calculating, but also work together, reason out loud, help each other and sometimes even ask for extra calculation time. This shows students gaining confidence and working to overcome a fear of math. Students encouraged each other to make the correct calculation, rather than shaming or mocking wrong attempts

This playful approach to learning, with an imaginative theme and two levels of difficulty made the game suitable for both weak and strong calculators. We were very pleased to hear the children ask afterwards: “When are we going to play it again?”

“I honestly never thought my class would get so excited about a math game. Children who normally drop out suddenly joined in enthusiastically. They calculated out loud, thought together and helped each other. The action cards in particular made the game extra exciting. As a teacher, you want this in your classroom.”

“Math Masters is magical. The children not only enjoy it, they really learn from it! Students practice sums without it feeling like they have to. I saw a girl who normally has trouble with math come to life. Now she no longer feels any shame around math.

And the great thing is: you can differentiate by choosing the easy or difficult side of the board.”

“What struck me was the combination of math skills and fun. It is rare to come across an educational game that is so well put together. It works as a cooperative and competitive game. Commitment, involvement and self-confidence increased visibly. This is a really useful tool for primary schools.”

“From the moment we started playing, the children were completely engrossed. Even the students with math anxiety participated without shame.

Because students have to calculate out loud, a different dynamic is created: playful and educational. I want to use this game structurally in the math corner next year.”

“What I immediately noticed is how Math Masters quickly improves the confidence of students. Children dare to make mistakes, think out loud and help each other without judgement. That is so valuable, especially for students with arithmetic problems. This game fits perfectly within a school that works on social-emotional and cognitive learning.”
“Math Masters is exactly what we are looking for in contemporary math education: engaging, adaptive and fun. It stimulates mental arithmetic skills without pressure and encourages logical thinking and collaboration. The two-sided board makes it accessible to every group. I would recommend this game to every school.”
“I see every day how hard our team works to teach children arithmetic and Math Masters is a welcome aid to that. The game combines fun, learning and friendly competition. I want to use it next year during arithmetic circuits and extra hours because the reactions during testing were unanimously positive. This is not just a game: this is well-thought-out education.”
